A great way to strengthen a customer’s bond with your company is to let them have some input.  A simple survey can be very valuable in showing the customer you care about their opinions are experience with your company and helping you improve your company’s offerings. I don’t know about you but, when I need answers to keep my sales team running, 48 hours it too long. Guess what, once you’re in, you can’t get out.  You pay up front for the year and you can’t get a refund if you want out.  &lt;b&gt;Cost: $624.00 per user, per year&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Getting Your Data Back&lt;/b&gt; - In many cases, all you get is a bunch of SQL database tables or several separate excel files. Qualify the prospect aggressively early in the process. Then conserve your sales resources for the prospects that have a real shot of buying. But its a big switch. Most sales people use presentations and proposals as their initial hook. Of course putting those presentations together and coordinating the meetings is where most of their time goes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;If qualifying is about figuring out how the customer will cost justify your solution, then if you don’t have the answer yet, how do you decide what the best next step is?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;What if you start by asking yourself what’s in it for you? I don’t mean the obvious size of the potential deal. I mean what do you get out of the next step? That’s the counterintuitive part. We’re talking about selling something here. You don’t get paid until the deal is closed. So, its not always clear how to quantify the return on the interim steps in the sales process. No one’s going to pay you to show up and give a presentation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;If your sales process is demo, needs analysis, proposal and close, then first of all, it should be needs analysis; demo, proposal and close (see Double Your Sales in 2009 installments 1 and 2). When you’re finishing up the needs analysis, you first decide if their needs justify your solution, then you ask yourself what the prospect can do to ensure that your demo has the desired effect. What’s that desired effect? THEY ask YOU for a proposal!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;So what does your client need to do for YOU to be sure that the upcoming demo is a home run? Qualify the prospect aggressively early in the process. Then conserve your sales resources for the prospects that have a real shot of buying. But it’s a big switch. Most sales people use presentations and proposals as their initial hook. Of course putting those presentations together and coordinating the meetings is where most of their time goes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;If qualifying is about figuring out how the customer will cost justify your solution, then if you don’t have the answer yet, how do you decide what the best next step is? What if you start by asking yourself what’s in it for you? I don’t mean the obvious size of the potential deal. I mean what do you get out of the next step? That’s the counterintuitive part. We’re talking about selling something here. You don’t get paid until the deal is closed. So, it’s not always clear how to quantify the return on the interim steps in the sales process. No one’s going to pay you to show up and give a presentation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;The classic sales advice is "ABC - Always Be Closing". But in a complex sale with several steps in the buying process, you’re always happy to dish out the next step in the process just so that you can get closer to the closing step. It’s easy to "fall in love" with a lead.  They have a way of telling you what you want to hear.  It’s up to you to hold your team accountable.  When they fall in love with the wrong leads, it costs you and them money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;How SalesNexus.com does it…&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We decide upon a set of questions that must be asked of every lead and the answers that are "qualified answers". Some are obvious like "Are you the decision maker?" etc.  In fact that is the most important and most often neglected question.  It’s easy to excuse the sales team.  They’ll say "We can’t get in to see the CEO initially.  We have to start with someone else and earn their trust so that they’ll help us get the CEO’s attention.  Maybe so but, a staff engineer is not the decision maker. She’s going to ask "Can you send me a proposal?", "Can you come in for a demonstration?" and you’ll need to break some bad habits.  Most sales people see it as their role to please the customer. Here are a few questions you’ll need to know the answer to:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;∙ What are the crucial steps in the sales process?  Examples - Set appointment, presentation, proposal, close&lt;br /&gt;∙ How much time is typically spent on each step?&lt;br /&gt;∙ How many new leads or prospects does each rep typically go through this process with in a given period (week, month, quarter...)?&lt;br /&gt;∙ How many of them buy?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you don’t have this information, ask your team to start making a list of every presentation, proposal, etc. that they do for about twice the length of your typical sales cycle.  Then just crunch the numbers. Add to that all the calls and emails that go into coordinating meeting times and following up, trying to close and you’re easily up to 3 hours per lead or 150 hours per month.  We’ll assume that you have a 20 % overall close rate so, that means 10 out of 50 leads buy.  So it takes 15 (150 divided by 10) hours of sales time to get a purchase.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, 80% of the folks that your team spends all this time on don’t buy.  That’s 40 leads getting 3 hours each or 120 hours of sales time spent on leads for no return, every month.  What if you just started asking the right questions up front and decided not to go on appointments until you get the right answers or at least to hold off on the presentation and proposal?  Imagine that you could filter out 20% of the leads up front with a solid, simple series of questions that you use as the "bar" that leads have to get over before they "earn" your sales team’s expensive time?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, 20% of 50 leads is 10 leads x 3 hours amounts to 30 hours freed up each month!  That’s almost a week of each sales person’s time!  Obviously that’s significant.  It lowers the time spent per sale from 15 hours to 12 hours.  That can’t help but improve your bottom line! Many times, just adding an additional input box to your web form can filter out the “tire kickers”… like Title.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;You’ll also find that the lead’s “buying cycle” can vary greatly. Some are looking for something NOW. Others are investigating options that they can add into their budget for next year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;Bottom line, you need to have methods to be sure that your reps are qualifying the leads properly up front and allocating their time toward the most qualified leads with the potential to buy in the short term.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;Good news! It can be extremely easy and time efficient to set up. More importantly, setting up a system to manage the qualification and follow up for incoming web leads can be like pouring rocket fuel in your sales engine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;Here’s a step by step guide:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Get a contact management system in which ALL new leads from ALL sources can be added.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. If there will be more than 5 or 10 a day, be sure that when a web form is completed on your site, the lead is added to the contact management system automatically. Many vendors offer this capability at affordable prices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Track the search that was performed. Again, many vendors offer this capability. As above, if your sales rep knows the specific search phrase that was used, they are empowered to quickly and easily qualify and assist the lead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Add fields to your system that allow the sales rep to enter the answers to the top few qualifying questions directly into the database. Use standardized drop downs, etc. in order to keep data consistent and data entry fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Create lead nurturing systems for the leads that don’t qualify. This is key! If your sales rep has an easy way to be sure non-qualified leads are “touched” on the appropriate schedule, they’re much more likely to “let go” and avoid spending too much time repeatedly chasing the same old leads.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;With a system like this in place, you can be assured that you’ll be able to measure the return on your investment in your web leads. You’ll be able to track the results by search words and phrases and their level of qualification. This information is crucial in optimizing things in the campaign itself. You’ll also be able to ensure that your reps are pursuing only those “worthy” of their time. You may want them to continue to prospect by cold calling, asking for referrals and other methods. You need to know that your reps won’t be overwhelmed with non-qualified web leads so that they can continue these productive activities. The problem here is that your client probably is not the best judge of what makes a good prospect for you. They are also not likely to really know if their friend is actually in the market right now. They are more likely to just think that “they could use” your product or service.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;A web lead on the other hand, has demonstrated their interest in your company by their own actions prior to your ever talking to them. They stopped doing what they do for a living to pull up Google and search for something related to your company. Depending on what your company offers, they probably weren’t just doing it for fun!
